Now that my wife and I have settled into our new apartment and will both be receiving adult-sized paychecks we are left with the daunting prospect of actually doing the things we’ve been talking about for years. When I was in graduate school it was easy to talk about buying a house or having kids in the distant future. Now, the future has arrived. Thanks to the current credit markets and the corresponding evaporation of zero-down loans, we still have a bit of time to wait. Nevertheless, the most difficult aspect of my transition to assistant professor may be the search for a house. I’m assuming that, unlike the House Hunters on HGTV, we’re going to have to look at a lot more than three houses to find one that lives up to all of the ideas we’ve been accumulating over the past few years while watching shows like House Hunters.
